Anxiety is often associated with muscle tension and a fast heartbeat, as the body’s natural response to anticipated fear. Feeling anxious can be avoided with repression or displacement and other avoidant behaviors. Anxiety can develop during situations that create anxiety such as stage presentation, getting your first interview, etc. It can also appear in childhood for more than 6 months and can persist into adulthood if left untreated.

Anxiety is common around the world. In fact, there is an estimate of 275 million people globally are suffering from anxiety. The 2016 IHME, Global Burden of Disease data says that there are 170 million females compared to 105 males with anxiety. However, with 4% of the world’s population having anxiety (275 million), only 36.7% receive treatment for the disorder. They are also receiving thousands of calls this pandemic, most of those who called are anxious because of the pandemic.

In social anxiety disorder, a person doesn’t like to talk to most people out of the fear of disappointing them when they don’t make an instant personal connection.

Inferiority over superiority

When a person feels inferior when facing a person superior to him, he begins to be anxious. For example, in school, a boy brushed shoulders on a well-known class bully. The boy, being intimidated because of the class bully because of what he could do (verbal bullying, physical harassment, etc), starts to get anxious. He is most likely going to apologize to the bully knowing that he (the bully) is far more superior than him. Inferiority plays a part in our anxiety levels when confronted with someone superior. It’s the same way in workplaces, too. When an employee’s boss is reprimanding him because of his performance, he is most likely to avoid angering him and do better in the job given. When he comes across his boss, he gets anxious because of his superiority.
